a movie watching binge

With the kids at my Mom’s for the weekend, we went on a movie binge this weekend. Friday we saw Lord of the Rings: Two Towers. Enjoyed it, but I thought it dragged in places. I never read the books so a bit of it was lost on me. Last night we saw Catch Me If You Can. This was my favorite. Tom Hanks was amazing, as always and Leonardo DiCaprio was great. Truly and thoroughly entertaining. A few hours ago it was 25th Hour, a Spike Lee movie. First Spike Lee movie I ever saw in the theatre. Very good. Before the girls were born Eric and I would go to movies at least 2-3 times a month and we’re lucky if we see that many in one year. So this year we did it in 72 hours. ![]()

We are currently in the midst of one of the coldest winters this area of the country has seen in years. Yesterday when I drove to work the thermometer on my car read 3° today it was a grand 14°. Perfect time of year to do major construction, don’t you think? No insulation and nary a room without a hole covered in plastic.
We can deal with the mess and disorganization and if that’s all it was we’d be okay. Grumpy, but okay. But a house that won’t heat above 50° and pipes that are freezing so we never know which faucets will work we can’t deal with. So we’re outta here. We took a fully furnished condo for a month about 10 minutes away. The plan is that we’ll be ready to move upstairs by the time we come back here to live. I’m still here at the house often, but at least the girls will be warm at night and I know that we will have running water all the time.

I haven’t updated about the house in a while. It can be summed up in one word:
Brrrr.
It is so cold in this house. Outside average temperature is about 20° Inside temperature is maybe 52° on a good day. Brrrr. There isn’t a room that doesn’t have a hole covered in plastic. Yesterday, I noticed that the toilet paper in the bathroom was blowing in the breeze.
We were warned that this was the stage of the project where it would get tough (not to mention dirty) and it’s true. There’s nothing interesting to photograph since it’s all plumbing and electrical contractors here nowadays.
I keep reminding myself that it’s just one winter. We can survive this, and then next winter will be wonderful in our new warm house.
Brrrr.
Great Mac OS X tip

This had been bugging me in OS X 10.2.x and the fix is so easy.
Jaguar introduced spring-loaded folders.
The feature worked well with one catch…it seemed unpredictable as to exactly how the windows would open. Some would pop in icon view, others in list view, maybe a few in column view. I prefer to only work in column view, so this was annoying.
Today I found the answer, thanks to Mac OS X Hints. Simple command-click on the folder you want to pop and set it in the format you’ll want (column, list or icon). From now on, when you drag on to that folder it will pop as you set it. I’ve done this for my root level drive, my home directory and my applications folder. Groovy.
awwww….

Emily with her friends Kyle and Olivia from school:

Emily is really enjoying school this year. She has playdates at least twice a week and loves being with her friends. It’s fun to watch her in action…when she’s not driving her mom crazy as most 4 1/2 year olds are known to do.
