Adobe update package

August 22, 2003

Microsoft Watch reports that Adobe will package their upcoming upgrades for InDesign 3, Photoshop 8 and Illustrator 11 together. You could always buy Adobe products together at the same time, but once you needed upgrades it was a la carte. Makes sense and is long overdue that there is an upgrade price for the whole thing (similar to the way I was able to pay $400 and get Studio MX because I already owned at least two of the products). The article states a price of about $1,000 which I hope is for the full, new versions rather than an upgrade deal. Adobe upgrades tend to be in the neighborhood of $149 each, so I think the same $399 as Macromedia as an upgrade price would make the most sense. Like Macromedia, they could have one price if you own one product in the suite, another for two or more. I already own the latest Acrobat 6 Pro so I wouldn’t be interested in the package that includes that if there’s an extra charge.

I fully expect these products to have product activation, which is fine with me as long as the license allows installation on my iBook provided I’m not using it at the same time as my desktop. I just read that Quark will now allow you to install on a portable, for a $75 charge. Gee, isn’t that nice of ‘em? There’s no reason I can think of to have a separate upgrade-only CD anymore. Give the full product with an upgrade serial number that requires the previous product(s) to be installed (or the original CD to be in the drive at some point).

I was only planning on upgrading Photoshop and InDesign, but if Adobe makes it worth my while with a package I may go for a combined upgrade for all 3.

It should run quite nicely on my G5, thankyouverymuch. ;-)
