Eric and I saw Lord of the Rings: Return of the King on Saturday night. More on the next page in case of spoilers…
I never read the books. I wasn’t into that style of fiction when I was younger (and had the time to read a lot). A good modern-day mystery or thriller was more my style. That said, I loved all three movies. I pointed out to Eric that we actually managed to see all three movies in a theatre, which for a couple with two young children is no small feat. Not exactly crossing Middle Earth, but close.
Since I hadn’t read the books previously, there were times that I was a little lost. Plus, the movies have no exposition. They assume right off the bat that you’ve seen the movies that came before. I watched the Fellowship of the Ring DVD shortly before seeing The Two Towers and it helped. Unfortunately, it had been a while since The Two Towers to Return of the King and remembering who was who and what was what made it a little harder for me to get into the first hour.
The best part of this movie is that it had a conclusion, although the last scenes felt tacked on. Something happens, fade to black, come back on next wrap-up scene, fade to black, come back again. That happened a few times before the final “The End”. I had completely forgotten about the Elfen legend about the immortals leaving this world to men, so the final boat scene confused me at first. Someone a few rows behind us was sobbing during these scenes. No little sniffles, I’m talking full out crying. I found the scenes moving, but not quite *that* emotional.
