Validation woes

I’m trying to get the main page here to ["validate":http://validator.w3.org/,] (CSS validates without a problem) and I’m having one little issue. The validator is choking on my script code from “Blogrolling.”:http://www.blogrolling.com The problem is that I have the script code surrounded by (ul)(/ul) but the (li)(/li) tags are over at the Blogrolling site so the validator is getting confused.
Another note to self: customize the “SafeHref”:http://www.estey.com/mt/index.cgi?SafeHref filter so I can post code from time to time.
Redesign in progress

I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to keep my eyes open tonight, so here’s where things stand in case you see anything out of whack. This is also for my benefit so I know what I need to attack tomorrow.
The following pages are updated and should be working relatively well:
# Main index page (although there’s a section of the sidebar that will be coming along later)
# Category archive pages (these have been moved so instead of “cat_archivename.html” they’re now “category/index.php”…no one linked to those pages so there shouldn’t be a problem)
# Individual entry pages (have been relocated from viewfromhome/archivesnew/category/file_name_here.html to viewfromhome/category/file_name_here.php…an .htaccess should take care of that but in the meantime I’m leaving the old pages for the few sites that are linking to individual pages)
# RSS feeds (I almost moved them, and then thought better of it)
What still has to be done:
# Custom 404 page for redirects that fall through the cracks
# the Portfolio section (now separate blog instead of HTML pages)
# the About/Personal pages (index templates)
# Comment preview template
# Search template
# Main Archive page
# Fix some validation issues
Pay no attention to the mess

I’m in the process of getting the redesign set up and for some reason it’s affecting the main site. It shouldn’t, but it is and it isn’t worth fixing since it will be going away very soon…hopefully in the next hour or two.
InEffects 1.0

ALAP has just released “InEffects 1.0.”:http://www.alap.com/products/ineffects.html Looks interesting, and my ears always perk up at the idea of a plug-in for InDesign but $99? Whoa. That seems way too expensive. On the other hand, I gladly paid $149 for Woodwing’s “SmartStyles.”:http://www.woodwing.com/smartstyles.htm Set up a complicated formatted text box (including tables!), save it in a SmartStyle library and in a click you can apply the styles anywhere. It’s far more intuitive than the built-in library and styles and it paid for itself in no time on a single job. But InEffects’s application seems limited. I could see using it here and there on a headline, but that’s about it. For $49, maybe. But at $99 I’ll pass.
My bargain

I really want to get back to tweaking my new website redesign. It’s coming along nicely now. The main index is 90% done, and I’ve got a good start on the individual archive page. The hardest part is getting the general look and the major points…what does a link look like, what does a list look like, how does the navigation work. From there is just details.
But I promised myself that I wouldn’t touch that code again until I finish two identity projects I have on my plate. Not logos, but letterhead/envelope & business cards for clients with existing logos. For one the letterhead/envelope is already at the printer and I’m working on the business card (they were down to their last 80 sheets of letterhead so I had to move quickly). There are certain elements that have to be in this 3.5″ x 2″ space and I haven’t found “it” yet. You know, “it”…that moment when a design just works and you know it. I like what I did for them for the letterhead and I’m trying to get it to work as well for the card, too.
