From Scott Kelby’s column in this month’s “issue”:http://macdesignonline.com/issues/mayjune04/mac_lane.html of _Mac Design Magazine_ entitled “Apple and Digital Photographers - It’s a two-product company now, and neither is for photographers” The two products he’s talking about are of course, the iPod and Final Cut Pro. He goes on to express everything I’ve been blogging about the past few months. Even though he’s talking about digital photography, it all applies to graphic design as well. And this is from the guy who uses the “letters” section of his magazine to call anyone who says anything positive about Windows a “PC Weenie.”
Apple had a large showing at NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) and NAB (National Association of Broadcasters). But I missed their name on the list of “sponsors”:http://macdesignconference.com/exhibits.html of the Mac Design Conference. And they seemed to have missed “PhotoshopWorld”:http://www.photoshopworld.com/aftershow/sanfran04/sanfranphotos.html as well. So maybe his column is sour grapes, given that Kelby organizes both events but his points are spot on. Has Apple been involved in any show this past year, besides MacWorld San Francisco, that isn’t targeted towards the music or video industry? I certainly can’t think of any.
I think the final paragraph of the editorial says it best:
bq. Don’t get me wrong; I’m thrilled that Apple’s making money, I’m delighted iPods are selling like hot cakes, and I want to believe that the iPod is bringing more people to the platform, but I just read how once again, Apple’s worldwide market share is slipping. So Apple is having success getting Windows users to buy iPods and download the free iTunes for Windows. I wonder how Apple would do if they focused their efforts on digital photographers and graphic designers, who buy entire systems—G5s, displays, PowerBooks. I know, I know…some Apple marketing executive just read that and thought, “That’s all well and good, but would they still buy an iPod?”
