No longer interested in the latest adventures of Dora the Explorer, Laini begged us to see “Around the World in 80 Days”:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327437/ We took the girls to a matinee today. I expected to get a nap. Don’t even ask me anything about some of the TV-show inspired movies the girls have conned me into taking them to over the years…At those, I only hope I didn’t snore too loudly. I was pleasantly surprised by the movie today. It was fun. Laini enjoyed it and not much went over her head. Emily was a little bored, but she was entertained by the animations between the scenes and she recognized the names of all the countries the characters traveled to. At a full 2 hours (not counting 3 commercials and 4 trailers) it was also the longest movie the kids ever sat through in a theatre. Only one potty break each!
In particular, I enjoyed the cameos and inside jokes. _Shrek 2_ entertained the adults in a similar manner, but it was almost too much. If you didn’t get the pop culture reference, most of the humor was lost. _Around the World…_ managed to “wink, wink” at the adults yet the story still went along in a way that the kids didn’t miss out. I was a little concerned about the violence, given that it’s a Jackie Chan movie. But the truth is the fighting was more dance than damage and no one really got hurt. Think “Road Runner vs. Wiley Coyote”. I would have preferred the characters talk out their differences, but it wasn’t terrible and my kids have seen worse just on the front page of our local newspaper.
There’s a good review of the movie “here”:http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1488513/06182004/story.jhtml which if you’re looking for the movie not to spoil anything you should probably avoid. But the last paragraph summed up the experience:
bq. Maybe it’s a function of the low expectations one drags along to a “family film,” but this one took me by surprise. Whether it’ll do the same for you, I can’t say, but you might want to check it out. Take a kid along for cover.
