My birthday is coming (August 6th).

Maybe “someone”:http://www.idea-fountain.com who reads my blog from time to time would be interested in “this page.”:http://www.tivo.com/2.0.1.asp I’ve been thinking of changing his startup page to tivo.com, but that’s too obvious don’t you think?

Thanks for the link, “Lex.”:http://www.thefriedmans.net//blog/comments/tivo_announcement I hope “someone”:http://www.idea-fountain.com takes your advice. :-)

Busy weekend

When I say that to people, they often say “Yeah, but Judi, when is your life *not* busy?” True, but this one was more hectic than usual. Eric and I both fell asleep at around 9 pm last night which is unheard of for us. I’m typically a night owl.

On Saturday I was presented with a leadership award and Sunday was Emily’s 6th birthday. Read on for more.

Thanks to “Chuq”:http://www.plaidworks.com/chuqui/blog/001534.html for “this link.”:http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/nm/20040714/hl_nm/food_lowcarb_survey_dc

bq. More than half of all U.S. consumers that have tried following diets that eschew carbs such as bread and sugar have given up, a survey released on Wednesday found, and interest in the popular regimens appears to have plateaued.

Poor C2 and Lo-Carb Entennmann’s. We hardly knew ye.

“Weight Watchers.”:http://www.weightwatchers.com August 22nd. Trust me. ;-)

Lookout and Microsoft

A few weeks ago “I talked”:http://www.momathome.com/viewfromhome/software_reviews/my_favorite_pc_software.php about my favorite PC software. One thing I mentioned was Lookout. Lookout is a plug-in for Outlook 2003 that makes searching unbelievably fast. You can quickly type up a query to look for a very specific email mail message containing a certain phrase or attachment and Lookout would find it for you in less time than it took to type up the query. I have come to rely on it constantly, and I was perfectly willing to pay the $30 for it once it left “preview” phase.

Well, that’s not going to happen because Microsoft “bought”:http://www.lookoutsoft.com/Lookout/ Lookout and hired away its developers. Apparently, they’re going to use the technology in their hope-to-kill-Google MSN search. The fact that Microsoft has set its sights on another little fish it can swallow up and spit out (Netscape, anyone?) is another story. What struck me is the fact that Microsoft does deserve some props for actually buying technology it wanted and giving the original developers some $$ rather than taking what they liked about it and folding it into the OS like some companies that can remain nameless have been known to do. Not that Microsoft hasn’t pulled that trick, I’m sure they have. Many, many times I imagine. But in this case it appears they have done the “right” thing, even if I’m a bit bummed that a favorite plug-in will no longer be developed. I couldn’t care less about MSN Search. Lookout won’t do a thing for me there.

Update: Microsoft has now made Lookout available to all. I did notice this last week, but Kathleen was nice enough to comment with the URL. I took it out of the comment because the long URL didn’t sit right on my main page. So, if you want Lookout (and if you’re running Windows XP, you should), “get it here.”:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=09b835ee-16e5-4961-91b8-2200ba31ea37&displaylang=en

Vindication

Has it ever happened to you that you take a stand on an issue, and everyone around you thinks that you’re nuts? Crazy. Totally off your rocker. So, even though you know in your heart that you’re right, you decide that the truth will come out eventually and you decide to choose your battle. Right here, right now this isn’t it, so you let the matter drop quietly while you watch and wait.

And then time passes. Weeks, maybe months. And suddenly someone that you would never expect makes the *exact* same point that you made. And those people that shot you down aren’t looking at you like you’re so crazy anymore. It doesn’t help the situation to stand on a chair and yell, “Hey, I told you so!!” to anyone who would listen. So you don’t. But it sure feels good to think it. And then blog it.

This has happened to me twice in the past few months. One in my personal, community life and one online. And you’re not supposed to know exactly what I’m talking about. All that matters is that I know. :-)
P.S. And before you say it, this has nothing to do with Apple.
