I guess it’s good that I spent most of yesterday in a chest cold pain-induced haze, since I didn’t even try to get the [release version of Firefox 1.0](http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) until 2 am this morning. No problem at all downloading it from any computer.
I’ve been using it as my default browser for some time now, so there’s not much that’s radically new. The big news is that the most annoying Mac bugs have been fixed. I know they’re working on more Mac OS X specific fixes, but what’s there already is good enough for me.
The only extension that doesn’t work in 1.0 that I miss is the one that allowed tabs to be closed with a double click. Command/control-w works, too. But I’m not in the habit of doing it that way.
Microsoft [is getting nervous](http://news.com.com/2061-1012-5445529.html?tag=xtra.ml) about Firefox, and they should be. Aside from the occasional page that requires IE’s ActiveX controls for whatever reason, I can’t think of a single good reason to use anything but Firefox on a PC.
Once question, though…what ever happened to the New York Times ad? Did it run? I could have sworn I read that folks who donated would get a PDF of it, and it was supposed to run on November 9th but I haven’t heard anything more about it. Anyone see it? [Spread Firefox](http://www.spreadfirefox.com) is taking a nap now, so I can’t check there.

I thought it was coming out yesterday, but was disappointed after thumbing through the NYT. Spread Firefox said they are designing the ad right now. Talk about missing the 1.0 launch ball.
I guess they didn’t expect to have to work tens of thousands of names into it. I just reread the FAQ and it said that they’d get a better rate if they gave the NYT a 3 week window. Like $250K isn’t enough for an ad?
