Real estate is such a racket. It doesn’t feel like my home is mine anymore, since we’re constantly thinking about keeping it in “show” state. Forget making fish for dinner for a while, takes too long to get the smell out. The other day Eric started making the bed while I was still in it. And this morning before school, Emily drew a picture, wrote “Welcome to my room” on top and taped it to her door. Knowing that there was a showing scheduled, we spent the day out yesterday. It’s the weirdest feeling to leave knowing full well that strangers will be coming to look in your closets, *“…and you’re okay with this?!?”* keeps ringing in my head.
Tomorrow is the realtor’s open house. Sunday is a public open house. I’m more comfortable about these because at least my broker will be here the entire time so I’ll know someone in my house. This morning I got a call from Allied Vans Lines asking if I wanted them to come and give us an estimate. “Um, yeah, but I should probably wait until I have a *destination* first, don’t you think?” The vultures are circling.
I had a nightmare last night that we couldn’t sell the house. I dreamt that it was late May, and we hadn’t had a single showing or offer. In my dream someone offered us $8.95 for the house and we were considering it when I woke up. But here in reality, we got an offer on the house today. Seriously! Unfortunately, it was 10% below our asking price so we’re not jumping at it. We countered, they counter-countered and we’re still about $75K apart. So we’re putting the offer on hold. We want to have the open houses and give it a week or two. It’s the beginning of the shopping season and we’re not desperate. The sign just went on the lawn on Friday. If after a couple of weeks the house is still on the market with no better offers and the potential buyers are still interested, we’ll talk again.
