Yeah, yeah…now I’m blogging the important stuff. I have a new page to finish today and I’m just not in the mood to do it immediately.
So as not to bore those that couldn’t care less, the rest in the extended entry…
Anyway, this year the girls are watching [American Idol](http://www.idolonfox.com) with us. Laini really liked Amanda but she got bumped in the semis. Emily likes Vonzell and Anthony. Their bedtime is immediately after the show so they leave us with their favorites and make us promise to dial in and vote for them. We do try, at least. We don’t let them stay up for the results show since it starts when they need to be in bed, but it’s Tivo’ed for them.
This year is much better than last year. I like the change in the way they did the semi finals. No John Stevens sneaking into the finals on one good performance. The finalists had to perform consistently to make it this far, and they build an audience together, fairly, so any extra attention from the auditions shows is quickly negated.
We were all bummed to see Jessica leave last night. She has a great voice. Since Mikalah left, there hasn’t been anyone who doesn’t deserve to be there. Scott probably should have gone, but even he wasn’t *that* bad.
Nadia has to get past her “angry girl” thing. Even Tina Turner was able to soften it up once in a while. Being a child of the 80s, Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” is one of my all-time favorite songs. It’s soulful and introspective and heartfelt. Nadia’s rendition was brutal and harsh and I’m not even talking about her hair. Not that she needs to impersonate Cyndi, but she changed the entire emotional base of the song. I think audiences won’t forgive her for that until she can sing a ballad like she means it. Carrie did one Heart song very well to prove that she could take a step away from Country. Simon sees a versatile singer which means $$ in record sales since chances are good they’re already writing the songs for the winner’s debut CD. The winner has to have his/her own style, but be moldable. Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson are more successful than Ruben Studdard and Fantasia because they can more easily cross genres and the producers know it. Nadia needs to put her spin on Celine Dion or Whitney Houston without scrunching her nose up into a battle pose if she wants a chance of building the buzz to win that contract. She does another stomp-on-your-heart scream fest next week and she’s gone.
